VIDEO POKER

Now here's a game with a real skinny house edge...if you can play optimally.

First you place your bet, then the video poker machine deals you 5 cards.  Your goal is to have the best possible poker hand.  You may discard as many of these initial 5 cards as you want and receive a second deal/replacement cards. The game's pay table will then determine whether your hand results in a bet win, and if so how much.

There are many variations of the video poker, all offering different pay tables and hand rankings, however the basic premise of the games are similar.  The following pay table is from a typical Jacks or Better game.

Notice that the five coin payout for a royal flush will vary from machine to machine - so pick a machine that pays well.  Notice also that the 5 coin payout for a royal flush is considerably more that 250 per coin - making the 5 coin bet your best bet.

Good luck!

Video Poker Strategy

As noted, played optimally on a good paying game, Video Poker is one of the best returning games you can play.  In fact, some games, with good pay tables can actually offer a small player edge if played optimally.  Here's a good general guide to playing Jacks or Better Video Poker.

- Hold any four cards to a straight flush.
- Hold any three cards to a royal flush.
- Hold any four cards to a flush.
- Hold any low pair (tens or lower).
- Hold any four-card consecutive straight.
- Hold any two high cards of the same suit.
- Hold any three cards to a straight flush.
- Hold J, Q, and K of different suites.
- Hold any two high cards of different suites.
- Hold J, Q or K with a Ten of the same suit.
- Hold any single high card.
- If you didn’t get dealt any of the above, draw five new cards.

Good luck!
